“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:21
It is evident from the Word of God that our primary submission should be to God, surrendering our lives and everything concerning us to Him. Without this foundational step, any other submission lacks true meaning.
While the Bible also emphasizes wives submitting to their husbands, today’s message will focus on submitting to one another and those in authority over us.
Understanding the meaning and significance of submission is crucial. One essential aspect of this submission is accountability. Recognise that as humans, we may face vulnerability, and without submitting to godly brethren and leaders, we may expose ourselves to unnecessary troubles. Submitting to others who are spiritually fit provides a hedge of protection.
Submission also fosters humility and helps us avoid certain mistakes. God designed us to live in community, but if we choose to isolate ourselves, He may humble us by revealing our need for others. Therefore, take the initiative to submit yourself to accountability, correction, and guidance.
However, before submitting, consider important factors. Never let anyone replace God in your life. Every relationship, especially in cases of submission, should draw you closer to God and deepen your dependence on Him. Beware of any submission that lessens your reliance on God — that’s a red flag.
Additionally, be discerning about who you submit to. Vulnerability is inherent in submission, and it can be risky with someone who is not led by God. Seek the Lord’s guidance in choosing whom to submit to, ensuring they display godly characteristics, maturity, charity, and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
In conclusion, submission should be a wholehearted decision, not one foot in and one foot out. Honour those you submit to, as they will give account for your soul.
