“But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
Matthew 5:37
The weight placed on our words is closely related to our honor and reliability. We cannot take it for granted. Certain people’s words are as good as their lives. They are careful before uttering a word because once they do, they do everything to keep it.
Are you like this too? Or do your words change with your mood? Do you always find a reason not to keep a promise? Has “I’m sorry” lost its meaning due to overuse?
Can your Yes be taken as it is, or do we wonder if your actions will align with your words? Jesus warned about swearing by heaven to prove a point. He urged His disciples to let their yes be yes without additions. For your yes to be yes, you must have a history of keeping your word. It’s easier to avoid swearing if others can boast that you consistently keep your word.
Strive to be a person of your word. Only utter words you’re ready to keep. Let your words have weight, grace, and truth, every day.
Prayer
Oh Lord, please teach me to season my words with grace and to speak only that which is true. Please help us to keep your Word and to understand the gravity it carries. Amen, in Jesus’ name.
