“And he said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, “Lord, save me.”
Matthew 14:29-30
Peter did the impossible—he walked on water. But the moment he shifted his focus from Jesus to the wind, fear crept in, and he began to sink. This is the reality of every believer who takes their eyes off the Master in the face of life’s storms.
Looking away from Jesus is looking toward doubt. It’s placing more attention on the surrounding chaos than on the One who holds the storm in His hands. When we look away from our source of steadiness, peace, and strength, fear, doubt and failure come in to drown and suffocate us. When we are consumed by fear, anxiety, or distractions, our faith begins to waver, and we start to sink emotionally, spiritually, and even physically.
Jesus didn’t scold Peter for stepping out in faith; He reached out and saved him. But He did question his doubt. Why? Because faith and focus go hand in hand. Keeping our eyes on Jesus fuels our confidence and anchors us in every season. Beloved, the winds will blow. But fix your gaze on Christ. Don’t let the noise around you drown the voice calling you forward.
Charge: Keep your eyes on Jesus. In the storm, on the water, anywhere or situation, He is your anchor.
