“Thou lovest evil more than good; And lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.”
Psalm 52:3-4
Words carry power; power to build or destroy, to bless or curse. As believers, our tongues are not to be instruments of deceit, destruction, or division. The Psalmist exposes the deceitful tongue that delights in evil and lies, showing us how serious a matter this is in God’s eyes.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of careless speech, gossiping, exaggerating, or speaking harshly out of anger. But today’s Scripture calls us to a higher responsibility. Jesus said we will give account for every idle word (Matthew 12:36). That should cause us to pause before we speak.
A tongue that is not tamed can wreck friendships, ruin reputations, and scatter unity in the Body of Christ. James likens it to a fire and a world of iniquity (James 3:6). No matter how gifted or anointed we are, if we don’t control our words, our witness is compromised. Let us, therefore, yield our tongues to the Holy Spirit. Let grace season our speech, and truth guide our words. Speak life. Speak light. Speak like Christ.
Charge: Let your tongue reflect the heart of Christ. Be intentional with your words, speak life, not lies.
