“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9
We all know the story of Joshua, who took over the leadership of the Israelites from Moses and led them to the Promised Land. In Joshua 1:8, God instructed him to meditate on the book of the law day and night. But today, let’s focus on another part of the story, where God repeatedly tells Joshua to be strong and courageous.
Put yourself in Joshua’s shoes. He had witnessed Moses’ close relationship with God and his miraculous deeds. As a young leader, he must have felt inadequate to fill Moses’ shoes and to lead such a vast number of people to the land of Canaan. Joshua probably asked himself how he was going to achieve this daunting task.
We too can relate to Joshua’s situation. Sometimes, we receive a calling from God, but we doubt ourselves and our ability to fulfill it. We may be overwhelmed by the enormity of the task before us and unsure of how to proceed.
But God reminds us that we can be strong and courageous because He is with us. He will never leave nor forsake us. He will go before us and make our paths straight. However, we must first be strong and courageous. We must be steadfast in our obedience to His commandments and confident in who we are in Him.
Let the knowledge of God’s backing fill you with strength and courage. Today, I encourage you to take that step, to be strong and very courageous, knowing that God is with you.
