“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say…”

Psalm 124:1

Some victories cannot be explained by human efforts. Some survivals cannot be traced to our strength. Some stories only make sense when God is acknowledged. This is why the psalmist paused and said: If it had not been the Lord who was on our side…

Those words carry the weight of hindsight. They are spoken by a people who have seen danger up close, who have felt the threat of defeat, and who know, without doubt, that their escape was not accidental. Israel did not survive because they were clever. They endured because God stood with them.

There are moments in life when the odds were clearly against you. The timing was wrong. The resources were few. The opposition was strong. Yet somehow, you came through. That “somehow” has a name. It was the Lord. When we look back and strip away pride, we realise how exposed we truly were. It was the Lord who held the line, blocked the blow, spoke peace into chaos and made a way of escape.

Charge: Today, pause and reflect. Recount the moments you should not have survived. The doors that should not have opened. The peace that arrived amidst that chaos. And like the Psalmist echoes: If it had not been the Lord who was on our side…
