“Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”

Proverbs 21:23

Doesn’t the tongue seem to be the smallest part of the body and the least talked about? Shouldn’t we then be curious as to how the Bible describes the benefit of a preserved tongue and mouth as being capable of averting trouble, despite appearing to be a tiny part of the body?

Thoughts are generated from the heart but are projected to oneself and others through the words of mouth; and words, when spoken, cannot be unsaid. The wise likened spoken words to an egg, which when broken, cannot be anymore whole. Hence, decide what to do with your words before they are spoken. Don’t say what you don’t mean; only say what you mean because words are like messengers that can be sent on an errand into the future. The book of Psalms captures this so well, “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.” Psalm 107:20 (KJV).

Furthermore, one can be held responsible for his words, especially when he’s come of age to decipher between right and wrong. Words can become the reason for serving a jail term and at the same time, set one free.

Charge: It is better left unsaid than to live in the regret of a word never meant.
