“We love him because he first loved us.”
1 John 4:19
A child’s love doesn’t precede the parent’s love. While the child was in the mother’s womb, the parents loved and cared for the child. Now that the child is born, the love grows daily even before the child recognises the parents and reciprocates their love.
The illustration above depicts God’s love towards us and brings to our consciousness how great He showers his love upon us. The scripture for today is a worthy reminder that God is our “First Love”.
Most times, people give praise to God and talk about His love whenever there’s a reason to celebrate or something significant happens in their lives. Yes, we are expected to appreciate God for every good gift He gives to us, but that is not the only reason to show that He loves us. In John 3:16, God sacrificed His only Son to secure eternal life for us. This shows the extent of His love towards us which is not conditional.
In Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. We should remember that even before we became aware of God’s love for us, He has always loved us. May the love of God spread across our hearts in Jesus’ name. Amen.
