“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”
1 John 5:21
What idols are you abhorring? Anything can be an idol so far they are already taking the place of God in your heart. They can be material possessions, relationships, or even our desires and ambitions. The danger of idols is that they can lead us away from His will for our lives.
The Bible warns us to keep ourselves from idols and to put God first in all things. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”, Exodus 20:3. This commandment reminds us that God should be the centre of our lives and everything else should come after Him.
We need to examine our hearts and identify any idols that may be present. Are we putting more time and effort into our careers than into our relationship with God? Are we seeking approval from others instead of seeking God’s approval? These are just a few examples of how idols can creep into our lives. They don’t necessarily have to be objects.
Let us make a conscious effort to keep ourselves from idols and put God first in all things. When we do this, we will experience the true peace, joy, and fulfillment that comes from a life surrendered to Him.
