But the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

1Chronicles 19:18

Have you ever pondered how David achieved victories in ways that defied human logic? Even when outnumbered and seemingly unprepared, he triumphed over his enemies. Consider his defeat of Goliath with just a sling and stones.

How was this possible? Was it strategic prowess, wisdom, or simply David’s unwavering faith in the living God? But if these factors were the key, then why didn’t they yield the same results for Saul, who possessed strategy and wisdom from his years of experience? After all, Saul also believed in God. So, what set David apart and why did God always seem to be on His side?

The answer lies in God’s intervention in those battles. But what led God to consistently favor David?

Let’s consider this:

> Did you know that David didn’t lean on his own experience and abilities? (1 Samuel 23:1-4) Instead, he always relied on God. It’s understandable that he sought God’s help when he lacked proficiency with a sword and hadn’t tasted wealth and honor—traits that empowered him to slay Goliath. But even as a king with riches, mighty men, and honor, he maintained the mindset that, “Without God in this battle, my riches, experience, and manpower amount to nothing.”

> He walked in obedience. (1 Samuel 24:1-7, Psalm 119:11) This meant he only moved where God directed, guaranteeing God’s support as He always provides for what He initiates.

As Christians, we learn from this that we must continually lean on God’s strength and adhere to an obedient path. Our human knowledge and skills might falter, but God remains steadfast and never fails.

Prayer

Lord, please prevent me from relying solely on visible circumstances, my strategies or human help. Teach me to place complete reliance on you. Grant me the grace to remain obedient to your calling and guidance. Break every inclination towards disobedience within me.
