BE VIGILANT AND SHARPEN YOUR DISCERNMENT

Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

2 Samuel 13:15

It’s truly remarkable how Amnon, in this passage, went from loving something intensely to hating it so strongly, unable to imagine life without it just moments before. Equally astonishing is our own reaction when we fall into sin.

No matter how much we desired that sinful thing, regardless of the depth of our cravings and our perception of dependence on it, it’s as if our vision suddenly clears upon succumbing to the sin, and instant regret floods our hearts. Often, we find ourselves questioning what we found so enticing, and only by God’s grace can we be lifted from the pit of self-hatred

This is one of the enemy’s hidden tactics. He has a way of adorning dung to resemble gold, appealing to our desires. He dresses the most ferocious wolves in sheep’s clothing, enticing us to willingly approach a dangerous creature with smiles on our faces. The enemy is a master of manipulation and deceit, and as long as we allow him space, he ensures we only see an illusion of beauty. It’s only after we’ve fallen for it that our eyes are opened to the immense mistake we’ve made. Unfortunately, by then, the damage is done.

That’s why the Bible warns us not to be ignorant of the devil’s schemes in 2 Corinthians 2:11: “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” This wicked serpent takes an inch and turns it into a mile. As Christians, we must remain vigilant.

Don’t give in to something simply because it appears attractive. Verify and reverify. These times call for sharpened discernment. We cannot afford to neglect watchfulness and prayer. We must remain alert. Rise up, dear Christians. Refuse to allow the devil to trample upon you. Reject his deceitful words and enticing promises. Hold onto your faith with fear and trembling, and walk steadfastly on the narrow path.
