HOW TO PREACH THE GOSPEL

You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake.

2 Corinthians 4:5

The gospel is the good news that states that all men were once sinners, but that Jesus came and took all our sins on Himself and died to pay for them. In this way, we don’t have to panic about the weight and guilt of sins once we accept the Lord Jesus as Lord and personal saviour because even death could not hold Him down, and he has risen in victory.

This is one of the most beautiful realities a human can ever come into, and it is our duty as its recipients to preach this gospel to the lost. However, we must always be careful not to twist the gospel to make it more palatable for the ones we preach to. The whole gospel starts with us as sinners and Jesus as our Saviour.

While preaching the message of Christ, we should never point to anything other than Jesus. The gospel does not say, “surrender and you will be rich”, nor “accept Christ and things will become rosy immediately.” Unfortunately, many have sugarcoated the message to entice their converts quickly into the gospel. But this is a wrong approach.

You shouldn’t say, “Accept Jesus, and you will become like me.” As much as our lives bear witness to the power of God, God’s intent is not to make a man like another. He wants to know and love them and mould them into his image according to His unique plan for them. But if we preach the gospel around ourselves, we set them up to only expect God to walk with them as He has walked with us. They might even fall away if they do not immediately get that which you unintentionally set their eyes on. By preaching ourselves, because we are easily fallible, we would make the people fall into their past life even quicker than they accepted Christ.

“Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we’re proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers, errand runners, from Jesus for you Version).” Hence, preach the gospel with Jesus as the centre. Shout about the joy that’s to be found in Jesus. Scream about how He loves us and how His sacrifice shows how much He values us. Let them know about the wages of sin and Christ’s victory over sin. Let it be all about the person of Christ. Of course, it doesn’t mean you can’t share your testimonies, but ensure that Christ is always the central focus.

Prayer

  1. Dear God, help me lead men to you, not myself.
  2. Precious Holy Spirit, I ask for the wisdom to preach the gospel according to the word of God and according to your direction.
  3. Lord, give every other Christian and me a heart for the gospel.
  4. Father, in every way I might have preached myself while attempting to preach the gospel, please have mercy on me.
