WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I hope; my soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning.”

Psalms 130:5-6a

In some organisations, there’s a waiting room where those who are yet to be attended stay until they are summoned.

While waiting to be called, some people are deep in thought, some fantasise about different places they wish to explore, and some press their phones. Obviously, several things happen in the waiting room.

Likewise, different activities take place in our spiritual waiting room depending on what we choose to do or believe. Although some believe that God will show up for them, some walk out of the waiting room because they’ve lost hope and are tired of waiting.

Before Jesus ascended, He told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they had received power from God, which is the Holy Spirit. “Being assembled with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me.” Acts 1:4.

Do you know that they could have become weary while waiting, which could have stopped them from receiving the Holy Spirit? Of course, but glory to God that they waited; we are also privileged to be beneficiaries of their wait.

What about David, who was anointed as the King of Israel even when everything didn’t make sense? Besides, he was just a shepherd boy. But he waited for the fulfilment of that promise.

While Waiting

Get closer to God in Holiness: You must endeavour to stay holy in your waiting period. However, don’t just stay holy simply because you need something from God. You can’t be asking God for something when you’re in sin. God hates sins. Psa. 24:3-4 says, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.” “If I regard inquiry in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Psa. 66:18.

Pray: While the disciples waited on the Lord for the Holy Spirit, they gathered in one accord and prayed. If they had different agendas at that time and weren’t unified, they probably would have had to wait longer. Hannah also prayed to God for a child. “Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord.” I Sam 1:10. It is the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous (holy) man that avails much. James 5:16.

Study His word and learn His ways: You must always hear from Him to know what He wants you to do per season, and this can be possible by studying His word. “Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path. You need constant reminders from God’s words that you’re not alone.” Psalms 119:105.

Build Capacity: Although David was a young boy when he was anointed as the king of Israel, he remained in the field rearing his father’s flocks—and while he did that, God built in him a king who would oversee a nation. In that waiting period, attend courses, seminars, webinars, conferences etc., to sharpen your skills and knowledge. Start that program you’ve been thinking about and do it well.

Another thing you should do is develop the right attitude and motive. If you have an ulterior reason for waiting, you may have to wait forever. Sometimes, we don’t receive when we ask because God knows that if we get that thing, we may not use it to His glory.

Beloved, be prepared for the time God will launch you out for the purpose He has created you or for prayer you’ve been saying. You can’t be praying for a husband and don’t know how to cook, wash, do wifely duties, have good character, etc. You can’t be praying for a job and yet be sleeping and waking without preparing for the post you’ve put in for. You can’t be praying for a wife and be sleeping around with other women. You can’t be asking for a child and be acting unkindly to other people’s children.

Dear, what you do during this waiting period could determine your duration and even what you will bring out of it. Therefore, rather than being sad, be grateful for the privilege of waiting on God, knowing God is taking His time to do more beautiful things on your behalf.

Prayer

1) Pray for the grace to wait diligently and patiently on the Lord.

2) Pray that the reason for your waiting is actualised so that you don’t wait in vain. Jesus

3) Ask for the grace to be sensitive to know what to do, how to act, and what to say in this phase.

4) Ask for the grace to finish strong and not to be pulled out by the devil’s temptations.
