“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.”

Proverbs 19:11

I once saw a colleague get blamed publicly for a mistake he didn’t make. The tone was harsh, the embarrassment obvious, and everyone expected a reaction. You could almost feel the tension in the room—waiting for him to defend himself or fire back. But he didn’t. He simply listened, clarified gently when given the chance, and moved on. Later, when the truth came out, his calm response spoke louder than any argument he could have made.

Calmness is not weakness; it is grace at work. It is the strength to hold back when emotions rise, the wisdom to choose peace over proving a point. Many times, our first instinct is to react—to correct, to defend, to repay. But our opening Scripture calls it glory to overlook an offense. Not because it doesn’t hurt, but because we choose a higher response.

In life, not every battle needs to be fought. Some misunderstandings don’t need explanations; some offenses don’t need reactions. Calmness protects your heart from unnecessary strain and preserves relationships that anger could destroy. It takes grace to stay calm when you’re misunderstood, overlooked, or wronged. But in that moment of restraint, you gain something greater than being right—you gain mastery over yourself.

Charge: Choose calmness today. Let your strength be seen in what you refuse to react to.
