“But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.”

2 Corinthians 10:17-18

In a world where the best opportunities are secured through connections with top authorities, would you not rather network with the person with the greatest net worth? To simplify what I am driving at, we will use something we can relate to, especially concerning a man in constant favour in the marketplace; however, it goes beyond that.

Usually, opportunities that come through a recommendation by an influencer are approved faster than those tendered by an ordinary person. As such, there’s nothing we can bring to God to earn His approval except that we come through the One in whom the heart of the Lord delights.

It is to this end that our text reads: “For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.” When Christ our Lord places His mark and seal upon any man, he will be in perpetual favour with God and men. This recommendation does not come by merit, for Scripture explicitly says God has no delight in the flesh. Hence, nothing of ourselves can be done to earn a place in the heart of God.

Charge: Not our appearance, intelligence, or even our comeliness can make us deserving of God’s approval, but rather a heart and spirit that bear witness with God’s Spirit that we are sons of God.
