“For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low.”
Isaiah 2:12
In Isaiah’s prophecy (from our opening verse), the “day of the Lord” speaks of a time when every high thing will be brought down and every human arrogance exposed. No position, wealth, or achievement can shield a person from God’s sovereign hand.
Throughout the Bible, we see examples of the proud humbled. Pharaoh defied God and watched his empire crumble. Nebuchadnezzar boasted in his power and was driven to live like a beast until he acknowledged the Most High. Herod accepted the praise of men as though he were a god and fell under instant judgment. These stories remind us that no one is beyond God’s reach and that pride always invites a fall.
But humility is a safe refuge. To humble ourselves before God is to acknowledge that everything we have and are comes from Him. Beloved, God’s goal in humbling the proud is not to destroy but to save. His discipline calls us back to a place of surrender, where we can fully experience His grace.
