“A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.”

Proverbs 15:5

One of the greatest marks of wisdom is how we respond to correction. Our opening verse shows the difference between the foolish and the wise. The fool despises his father’s instruction—he rejects counsel, resists discipline, and sees correction as an attack rather than a blessing. But the prudent person welcomes reproof and values instruction.

It is easy to listen to praise and appreciation, but can we also listen to correction? Can we humbly accept when someone points out our mistakes, especially those in authority or those who genuinely care about us? The prudent person recognises that reproof is like a mirror—it shows what needs to change, and by paying attention, we can grow in wisdom and character.

Correction is not meant to shame us but to shape us. God often uses parents, leaders, friends, and even life situations to guide us and prevent us from going down harmful paths. Rejecting their counsel may seem bold, but it is actually a sign of foolishness.

Charge: When we embrace godly counsel, we position ourselves for greater maturity and divine favour.
