“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:12
In basic English, we all must have been taught the different means of communication which includes verbal and non-verbal communication. We may also remember some of the things that communication is not, of which one to be stretched is, “Communication is not without an active recipient and is not mere noise-making.” Beyond that, the means of communication is in the little things often despised.
From our text, God invited Elijah to a meeting where He’d share some things with him. At the point of the meeting, Elijah needed to discern not just the presence of God but to leave with a message for which He came. Firstly came a wind, an earthquake, then accompanied with fire, signifying God’s presence. The sight was terrifying, especially coming with an audible and awkward sound but God was not there. They were without a definite message except events unfolding, until thereafter came a still small voice—a gentle whisper, and there came the overwhelming presence of God.
A functioning eye sees but it takes a man given to God to discern when He shows up. Don’t be carried away by the drama, God speaks in the most unlikely manner through unlikely means.
Charge: Let your heart be quick to discern, and be sensitive at every point to the voice of God.
