“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
Job 28:28
As children of God, we pray for the wisdom of God alongside His understanding. We should know that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom while to shun, forsake or turn away from evil is understanding.
It is wisdom that prompts us to honour God in words, thoughts and actions. The wise believer reverence and worship God respectfully at all times. From the scripture in Psalms 111:10, we identify that to receive God’s wisdom, we must fear God. How do we fear God? To fear God is to desire to live in harmony with His righteous standards and to honour Him in all that we do. And as we develop the fear of God (wisdom), we grow in understanding.
The fear of the Lord in our hearts makes us flee every appearance of evil because we know that “God is holy”. It is the understanding we have about God that will make us seek to obey His commandments. Wisdom is incomplete without understanding. If you say you fear God, and you have not learned why you must walk away from all that looks like evil, then that is an absence of both wisdom and understanding. Therefore, you can’t be wise and not have understanding of what you’re wise about. May we receive the clear knowledge of what it means have wisdom and understanding of God. Amen.
Charge: Seek wisdom, and seek understanding.
