“But many that are first shall be last, and the last shall be first.”
Matthew 19:30
The two verses preceding the above passage were Jesus’ responses to Peter’s question, paraphrased as “What will be the reward for those who left everything to follow Him for the kingdom’s sake?” (Paraphrased).
Having replied to Peter, Jesus emphasized that overtaking is permitted in the Kingdom’s race. This supports the point in Ecclesiastes 7:8, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof.
Starting the heavenly race is good; continuing is better, but it’s best to finish the race with the same love, passion, focus, sacrifice, consecration, commitment, and faithfulness, and even more.
The Lord Jesus cautioned all His followers and potential disciples that one who looks back after laying hands on the plow isn’t fit for the kingdom. We must each resolve to finish the race we’ve started, aimed at the ultimate destination of heaven.
Older believers must be cautious not to lag behind, leaving new believers to run fervently. Time is short, so let’s all run until the finish, maintaining our initial love and consecration. Then, the reward will be ours.
