“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.”
Luke 6:27-28
This text reminds us of how Jesus prayed for His enemies. Let us consider how Jesus treated the people. He fed them, healed those sick with various ailments and diseases, and restored sight to the blind. Yet, despite His goodness, the people repaid Him with evil by crucifying Him. Who would have expected that the very people He loved would later demand the freedom of a criminal instead of Him? Despite the humiliation and suffering on the Cross of Calvary, He still prayed to God to forgive them.
Praying for our enemies is a sign that we are saved and following Christ’s commandments. Despite the kindness Jesus showed to His disciples, there was still Judas, who betrayed Him, leading to His persecution. As believers, we should remember that in life’s journey, there will always be a Judas and many others, even among those we love and respect.
Furthermore, Jesus instructs us not to repay evil with evil but to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us. Despite the numerous enemies Jesus had on earth, His standard of praying for them never wavered. He didn’t desire the death of any sinner. God takes no pleasure in seeing His creation go to hell, and that same spirit should be in us. We should not rejoice when a sinner dies.
Therefore, as believers striving to reign with Christ someday, it is essential to always pray for our enemies. While it may not be easy, with the help of the Holy Spirit, it can be achieved.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, in this journey of life, please grant me the grace to always pray for my enemies and love them. May I find peace with all my enemies, even when they do not seek peace. Lord, use me as a vessel to call sinners to repentance. May my life glorify You to the extent that they desire to see You in their lives too. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
