The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendour of the old.

Proverbs 20:29

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12. In this scripture, you will observe that Paul didn’t want Timothy to be a Christian by position and name only; he also wanted him to be an excellent example to all believers. That is the characteristic of a godly youth. If you’re not a good example to those around you, you’re not a godly youth!

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain.” Ecclesiastes 12:1-2. Why should you remember God in the days of your youth? What evil days is that verse talking about?

If you’re not careful to understand what the wise is trying to say here, you may lose the meaning of the message in those verses. In verse 2, King Solomon used some inanimate objects to represent the human body parts. What part can you call the light of your body? The eyes, of course. If someone gets blind, that person will be in utter darkness.

So, Solomon was saying that we should remember God in the days of our youths when the evil days are not yet come. Those evil days are those days we can no longer see sharply. You will understand this lesson well if you have old ones around you.

“In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened.” Verse 3. Who are the keepers of the house? What house is being referred to in this verse? That house is your body. The keepers of the house are those parts that make up all of your body systems, and the grinders are your teeth.

The Bible is saying that that house shall tremble. Have you seen the aged ones before? Do you see how they walk? Do you see how they speak? Their entire body trembles. Do you observe how weak and few their teeth can be? Is it when that is happening to your body that you want to pray for salvation? Or is it then you want to establish a relationship with God? Think about it. Now that you still have the strength to go here and there, use your life for god. That is where your glory lies—in your strength.

Finally, beloved, “…I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.” 1Jn 2:14.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I have sinned against you in these days of my youth. I have involved myself with irrelevant pleasures of this world, and I know I don’t deserve your love. But I plead that you have mercy upon me, oh Lord. Please, help me recover my lost glory to function adequately in your presence again. Please, guard my heart and keep my thoughts from wavering. Help my youthful days to become one which leaves a legacy for future generations. Thank you for your answered prayers. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
