Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

It has happened again. After hoping and waiting, it turned out it was all for nought. After all, you’ve tried all possible means to ensure positive results; but this time, you’re tired and not even sure you have the strength to keep trying. The responsibilities are overwhelming, and sometimes, you doubt being able to carry all that’s being thrown at you—insults from delayed conception, unemployment, late marital settlement, unstable finance, and all sorts of challenges. The way people throw questions at you isn’t even making matters any better. Perhaps you’re just weary for no tangible reason you can point at.

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. That’s Jesus talking to you right there. The first thing to comprehend from the above verses is that Jesus knows exactly how you feel. He understands the strain and how heavy the burden you’re carrying is. He understands your pain and weariness.  He acknowledges it and says, “Come, let me carry it for you. Let me ease you of this burden that weighs you down. Let me teach you the ways of grace so you might find rest and peace in your soul.” He’s principally saying He is right here for you. He’s never leaving. Besides, “…we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” Heb. 4:15.

The first step to accepting this heavily burdened life is to confess your sin, believe in the sacrifice on the cross and the power of His blood to wash away your sins, and accept Him as your Lord and personal Saviour. If you have done this, I celebrate you—you have chosen the path leading to eternal life. But there’s more.

Now that you have dropped your burdens at the feet of Jesus, you must consciously take up His own yoke. But don’t be afraid; his yoke is light because He gives you the grace to carry it. Your role is to learn of Him, lean on Him and hearken to Him. As Christians, to continuously enjoy this life of rest, we must constantly learn the ways of the Father, obey Him and follow Him diligently through His Word and by engaging His Spirit in obedience and prayer.

We must also never neglect the power of surrender, the power of turning to God in times of weakness and asking for strength. Remember, the life God has planned for you is one of total peace and rest. So, walk in it.

Prayer

  1. Father, I ask for your strength, peace and rest.
  2. I admit I have tried to go about my activities without first bringing you into the equation, and I repent today.
  3. Precious Holy Spirit, please teach me how to come to this place of rest in you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
