“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13
In the above verse, the wisest man who ever lived was telling us that the whole duty of man is to fear God and do His commandments. That is exactly the chief end of a man: to fear God and do His commandments.
The sister verse of the above scripture is found in the New Testament of the Bible: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” Matt. 7:21.
In the above verse, Jesus told us that a man’s chief end is to do the will of God. From there, it is obvious that not everyone that professes the name of God is truly a child of God and will enter into the kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is only meant for those who do the will of God. Doing the will of God and fulfilling His commandments is the chief end of a man. If the ultimate purpose of your life is to do your own will and not God’s, then you’re yet to discover the true essence of your existence on earth.
Martin Luther King Jr. also shared his view on this subject in his book, A Knock at Midnight. He said the summum bonum of man, that is, the most important goal of man is to do the will of God and fulfil His commandments.
What is the will of God for your life? The salvation, sanctification and the infilling of the Holy Spirit for your soul is the will of God for you. When you surrender your life to God and get saved, you’re doing the will of God. When you press forward and get sanctified by the blood of Jesus Christ and become filled with the Holy Spirit, you’re doing God’s will as well. Preaching the gospel of Christ, thereby growing the kingdom, is another way of doing God’s will.
Doing the will of God is the only passport for you to make heaven, according to what Christ said in the scripture above. You don’t need to ask God whether you need to be saved or not, that is the will of God for you. He finds no pleasure in the death of a sinner but for everyone to repent.
You don’t also need to ask God whether you need to be sanctified because He said in 1 Thess. 4:3, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication.” So, it is the will of God for you to be sanctified too.
However, there are times we really need to pray to God to seek His will for our lives before we make certain decisions. In your marital life, career, and other areas where you need to make decisions, you need to seek God’s face to do His will so that you don’t choose wrongly.
If you feel God’s will is too archaic for you to follow in this generation, then you’re yet to accept being a creation of God; because we must all accept that we are not in this world on our own accord but by God’s grace.
God created man for His pleasure. He created man so that man could serve Him. That is the ultimate purpose of every man on earth. That is the chief end of a man. Therefore, if your career, relationship, and all that makes you who you are don’t correspond to God’s will, then you need to make adjustments today and start living for God.
Finally, as true Christians, we must always pursue God’s will for our lives. It may not seem easy because His thoughts are far above us. However, we shouldn’t be like Balaam who went for the permissive will of God (Numbers 22-24). We should go for God’s sovereign will in all circumstances and ask for God’s help.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for this exposition. Thank you for creating me in your image and for your own will. Thank you because I am created for signs and wonders. Thank you because whatever I do will be for your will in Jesus’ name. I pray to start functioning purposely according to your will for my life. In my career, relationship, and all decisions I make, I surrender to your will alone, no matter how difficult it may seem; for I know your will for me is of good and not of evil. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
