Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
Romans 12:29
This verse above is just like visiting an entirely messed up toilet. Despite being pressed, you can’t even put your feet anywhere, not to talk of sitting on the WC. The spontaneous reaction will be to flee from that sight because it is so disgusting that you can’t breathe properly.
That is how we should react to evil—abhor it. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says we should “Abstain from all appearance of evil,” such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, pride, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, and lies (Col. 3:5,8,9).
For instance, many intending couples today want to know if kissing is bad in a relationship. They already know that anything done to ignite the desire to be sexually close to their partner is immoral and shouldn’t be entertained, yet they feign novice. “Flee sexual immorality…” 1Cor. 6:18a.
The instruction in the above scripture is FLEE! You can’t be entertaining unnecessary questions and not expect unnecessary answers. If you don’t want something, you will avoid being seen in any area close to that thing.
This is how we should react to sin, which easily beset us as Christians (Heb. 12:1). Sins that we overlook and refuse to accept as sins simply because they have become habits, beneficial in sinful ways, etc. These sins can regress our Christian journey. They can draw us back because they are the devil’s weapons to overcome Christians.
When the devil met Eve and deceived her, do you know that if Eve hadn’t entertained him, he would have been disappointed and left a failure? But because of the curious nature of man, she wanted to know more; she wanted to see more, and so she fell into the trap of the devil, and he was able to penetrate her godly wall, bringing sin to the entire human race.
As Christians, we must be able to set godly boundaries that will block the devil from our camp. We can do this by submitting our entirety to God. “So, submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.” James 4:7. Jesus understood this principle; He resisted and shunned the devil with the word of God, and the devil FLED.
Finally, brethren, when we flee from the tactics and vices of the devil, he will also flee from us. Therefore, above all, guard your heart and hold on to the truth in Christ.
Prayer
1. Ask for grace to resist the devil and flee from all appearances of evil.
2. Confess those sins that easily make you fall, habitual sins, and ask for the grace to overcome and steer clear from them henceforth.
3. Pray for the body of Christ that the Lord will uphold His church to stop falling into immoralities.
