“Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.”
Luke 11:35
Consider how a lamp is meant to chase away darkness. If the glass of the lamp becomes covered with soot, the flame may still burn, but its brightness will be weakened. In the same way, a heart can slowly gather layers of pride, bitterness, hidden sin, or self-deception while continuing to function outwardly as if all is well. The danger is not that the light stops existing, but that the light becomes compromised without the bearer noticing.
Light is meant to reveal, guide, and give clarity. Yet we are being warned to “Take heed therefore that the light which is in us be not darkness.” This light isn’t about physical light but about the condition of the heart. A person can carry the appearance of light—knowledge, influence, or even religious activity—while something inside remains spiritually clouded.
Jesus’ warning invites self-examination. What we call light may actually be darkness if it is not rooted in truth, humility, and obedience to God. Spiritual light is not measured by activity alone but by the quality of the heart before God. A life filled with religious appearance but lacking love, purity, and sincerity may carry a light that has been slowly dimmed by inner shadows.
Charge: Examine the lamp of your heart. Ask God to search your thoughts, motives, and desires. Let the Holy Spirit cleanse every hidden darkness so that your light may shine clearly.

Do not settle for brightness that is only outward. Walk in genuine light, for true light reflects the nature of Christ and leads others safely to God.
