“Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

Galatians 4:7

Do you think it is possible to live as a servant under one’s parents? If you say yes, you’re correct; and if your answer is no, you’re also not wrong. It is our knowledge gap and perspectives that differ. There are several things and experiences of course, that’d have resulted in our conclusions, but let’s look at it this way.

It ought not to be so, that a child who lives in the awareness of his parents’ presence would live as a servant. There were times when I was much younger that I behaved more calmly because I wasn’t in my father’s house, but not when I saw my mum or dad around. The awareness that these are my parents gave me so much freedom that I may not have ordinarily expressed in other people’s homes.

At home, I can ask for more food or freely play and shout, but in a stranger’s house, I often hold back. The difference is belonging. That same sense of belonging gives peace and freedom with God. Until we come to the awareness of our full adoption as sons of God, we’d feel restrained from exercising our sonship rights and privileges.

Charge: Sons know their rights, children don’t. Grow to become a son, and not remain a child.
