“The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
Nahum 1:7
In ancient times, strongholds were massive fortresses built to protect cities from invading armies. Towering stone walls, iron gates, and watchtowers surrounded those within, offering safety and refuge when danger approached. When enemies advanced, people would run inside the stronghold and shut the gates, confident that the thick walls could withstand any attack.
In our opening verse, Nahum paints this same picture of God: He is our Stronghold. Life is full of battles: unexpected losses, overwhelming pressures, unseen spiritual attacks, etc. But when storms rage and enemies surround, we don’t have to stand exposed. God Himself is the fortress where we find protection.
Notice the promise: “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” God doesn’t merely provide a safe place; He knows those who run to Him. Like a fortress that opens only to its own people, His protection belongs to those who trust Him. Are you facing a “day of trouble”? Run into your Stronghold.
Charge: Our true defence is not man, stone or steel, but the Almighty who surrounds His children with favour as with a shield.
