“And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.”
Genesis 14:16
Abraham’s actions in today’s Scriptural reference reveal a heart that prioritises people over possessions and selflessness over self-preservation. After Lot chose the most attractive lands and went near Sodom, eventually finding himself in a difficult situation, Abraham should have let him face the consequences alone. But instead, he rallied his trained men and pursued the captors, not for his own personal gain, but for the love he had for Lot.
Abraham rescued Lot, the women, the people, and even the goods. Yet, he claimed nothing for himself. He even refused the spoils of war offered by the king of Sodom. His confidence was in God as his provider, not in worldly gain.
The selflessness of Abraham challenges us even in today’s reality. The question we should ask ourselves is—are we willing to go the extra mile for others, even when they’ve made poor choices? Are we willing to help others despite their negative actions toward us? Do we place people above personal profit? Abraham’s example reminds us that the path of faith includes humility, sacrifice, and trust in God’s provision. His selfless act mirrors the sacrificial love Jesus teaches.
Charge: Choose the selfless path of Abraham. Be bold in love, humble in victory, and selfless in service.
