“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
Romans 1:18
What is God’s wrath?
It is the natural and necessary expression of His holiness in response to sin. It is His perfect reaction to wickedness. Because God is infinitely holy, He cannot love righteousness without hating evil and moving against it. When He acts against sin, the Bible describes this as His wrath.
God’s wrath signifies that He is utterly opposed to sin and cannot tolerate it. If we truly grasp the depth of God’s hatred for sin, we will understand how deeply our sins grieve Him. While God is merciful to forgive and blot out our transgressions when we repent, this is never an excuse to remain in sin.
Knowing that God’s response to unrighteousness is wrath should give us a deeper appreciation for what happened on the cross. When Jesus bore our sins, He also bore the full weight of God’s wrath, which is why He cried out in anguish, feeling forsaken. He experienced this separation for our sake, so we must never take God’s mercy for granted.
Charge: Jesus died to save us from all our sins—let us live in response to His grace.
