For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lust and pleasure, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost”.

Titus 3:3-5

Your Godly living is not by chance or by any effort of yours, but by the mercies of God. Long ago, when I was in Secondary School in Ghana, one early morning, a fellow senior in my dormitory complained about her missing uniform which she found with a junior student. Quickly, we invited the girl, and I took the front role to accuse her. I saw myself as righteous and condemned her so well, she gave in to tears. I didn’t give her the chance to even apologize for the wrong act. I called her a thief and other names I shouldn’t have.

We collected the uniform from her and asked her to leave the room immediately. The girl left weeping, very sad, and ashamed. But we weren’t remorseful about our action but were rather happy we dealt with her. About a month after that incident, another senior sleeping on the lower bunk bed accused me of stealing her underwear.

I did everything to explain, but she refused to listen to me. She even added that she saw me wearing it. Everyone in the dormitory believed her including the juniors. I felt so disgraced and sad. Then immediately, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the accusation I made toward the junior girl for stealing a school uniform. I understood how the girl must have felt that day and asked God to forgive me and restore me.

It is by God’s mercies that we were saved. He showed us mercy by sending His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Therefore, we must also show mercy to weaker vessels. Correct them in love and show them the way of Christ. Today’s scripture teaches us that, we were also once like them, but God showed us mercy through Christ. Therefore, let us replicate the nature of Christ by treating others in love, rather than to condemn them.

Charge: Show mercy unto others for we all never deserved God’s mercy, yet He showed us.
