“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
Proverbs 27:17
A traditional fireplace usually has pieces of wood set on fire and put in a central place. Its job is to warm up the room, and to do that job thoroughly, each piece of wood has to be burned.
Dear Christian, imagine that your fireplace signifies the people that surround you. Mentors, close friends, spouse, influencers—those you look up to/allow into your space so that you consciously/unconsciously replicate them). If the people around you were to be pieces of wood in your fireplace, how much heat would it generate to warm up the room? (that is, your heart/mind).
What are you learning from the ones around you? Did you know that the fastest way to become like something is to stay in the presence of that thing? What are you watching? Who are you letting influence you? What is on your social media feed? What things does your pastor say? What kind of things do your friends say? What are you becoming by virtue of staying under the influence of these ones?
Answering these questions is the best way to know the state of your fireplace. Do not let it be that you still have to use a blanket when you have a fireplace because it is not producing any fire. Make sure your woods are lit!
Prayer
Lord, I pray for the gift of wood (friends and mentors) that you have lit by yourself. Please, help me to discern and follow your voice. Help me not to the one putting off the fire of others in Jesus’ name. Amen
