“I will love thee, O LORD, my strength”

Psalm 18:1

Love is commonly understood as the affection shared between two individuals or as a unifying bond. Love can also be categorised as a desire, a deep feeling, or an intense interest in something. Love fosters respect, intimacy, and relationships.

As children of God, how do we demonstrate our love for Him? If we profess to love God, then we must revere Him, cultivate an intimate relationship, obey and honour His word, and spread His teachings—the gospel. It’s no surprise that Jesus instructed Peter to tend to His sheep if Peter loved Him.

Our introductory verse reads, “I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.” The psalmist recognised that God is the sole source of his strength, and without God, he is merely a feeble vessel. Embracing this understanding, he chose to express his love and devotion to God.

How deeply do we grasp the nature of God? If we truly apprehend God as our strength and essence, our love for Him will be all-encompassing.

Genuine love for Him translates to our obedience, reverence, acknowledgment, and adherence to His principles. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus declared, “…Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,” for only then can we align ourselves with Him and become more like Him.
