“Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.”

John 8:55

  1. The Message Version of this scripture says, “You haven’t recognized him in this. But I have. If I, in false modesty, said I didn’t know what was going on, I would be as much of a liar as you are. But I do know, and I am doing what he says.” John 8:55

There are times when we refuse to acknowledge a truth the Lord has given us or a position the Lord has placed us in, all in an attempt to appear humble. Even though we don’t outrightly lie, we often say things that don’t align exactly with the Lord’s calling, so as not to offend others or seem prideful. We hold back to seem humble.

In our passage, the Jews were upset that Jesus claimed to know God. Despite appearing as a mere man, how could He boldly assert knowledge of God? Shouldn’t He have kept peace and stayed quiet? Perhaps just humbly claimed to be a servant of God? But no, Jesus explained that it would be a lie to deny knowing God just to pacify them. Falsely claiming ignorance or humility would be dishonest.

Similarly, believers today sometimes make the mistake of denying their true calling to seem humble, losing their authority in the process. Authority requires truth. If God places you in a leadership role, seek His wisdom to guide and nurture others, rather than ignoring that calling so that they feel comfortable around you. If we persist in this, growth may stall and God’s purposes may not unfold as intended through us.

So, dear believers, be cautious of the trap of lying disguised as humility. Guard against it. Don’t prioritise human approval over your relationship with your Father.

Prayer

Lord, please prevent me from missing the opportunities you’ve prepared due to false humility. Grant me wisdom to lead and guide others in Jesus’ name. Amen.
