Sometimes, even as Christians, we view lies as not being very serious or as sins that can be excused due to certain reasons that seem genuine to us. We might even dismiss them as jokes.
However, it’s important to recognise that God abhors all sin, as sin is inherently abominable. It’s crucial to understand why lying is so grievous.
In John 8:44, Satan is referred to as the father of lies. There is no truth in him, and anything originating from him is distorted. He presents lies as appealing, true, necessary and backed by exciting evidence, while in reality, they are twisted.
Lies fundamentally contradict God’s nature. Lies undermine the essence of Christ, which is TRUTH. Lies are deceitful and cunning. Every time one chooses to lie, regardless of its magnitude, it aligns with the core of who the devil is and opposes God. The lies propagated by the devil distort the beauty created by God and ensnare those who struggle to distinguish truth from deception. Lies sucks out the beauty and radiance of everything they touch, often serving as a starting point for other sins.
As believers, we must resist the temptation to lie, even in seemingly insignificant matters (why lie if the issue is truly insignificant?). We should avoid playing with forms of untruth, like exaggeration or lying for surprises. To God, any form of lying is lying.
Avoid lying! Refrain from engaging in behaviors that align with the devil’s nature. Do not be deceptive. It displeases God, brethren. Speak the truth, and it shall set you free.
Prayer
Father Lord, please, free me from deceitful speech. Help me understand the necessity of embracing only truth in my life. Empower me to uphold truth in all circumstances. I refuse to assume the image of the devil over my essence. Help me, Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
