“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19,21

Check your heart. What are the most important things to you? What are the things you cannot do without? What is that thing that if taken away from you, you are not sure you could survive?

The honest answer to those questions is where your treasure is stored. However, here’s what the Bible says, “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matt.6:20.

The major difference between treasures laid on earth and those in heaven is that God is in total control of and the sole focus of the latter, and you are in charge of the former.

What’s fascinating is the fact that your heart does not necessarily need to be focused on “bad things.” It can be legitimate things like family, impact, or even God’s work. But as long as God does not control it, cannot ask you for it, or it is more vital to you than God, then it is a treasure stored on earth. Many of us are guilty of this, and earlier we adjust and surrender all to Jesus, the better. For a day is coming when you will beg God to take it all from you, but it will be too late.  May we not be cast away in Jesus’ name.

Prayer

  1. Lord, I ask for the grace to set my heart on things above and not things on earth.
  2. Help me, Lord,to have you as first in my heart and in all I do.
  3. Father, please help the church to redirect their focus from the things of the world and to you in Jesus’ name.
