“And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”
Ephesians 5:2
I heard someone say this once;
“To walk in love is not to love by feelings but to walk by the Spirit. It is not to act by feelings but to act by leading. Without the Holy Ghost, you cannot walk in love.”
And that statement encompasses what God requires of us when He asks us to walk in love. He expects us to see others through the eyes of love (eyes of the Spirit), and walk with them accordingly. He requires that we show forth love, the type that is not dependent on what we receive but on the Spirit’s work in our hearts.
This is why it is quite impossible to truly walk in love without the Holy Spirit. Because love, true love, is a submitted heart letting the Holy Spirit flow freely through him. And that is the why, at its core, love is a decision. It is you choosing to ignore your fleshly reactions (no matter how well-deserved), and instead doing what you know God would have you do. It is choosing to listen to that still small voice, and letting your actions be an expression of the Father in that moment. It is reading your Bible and hearing God give you instructions from there. That is love.
“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” 1 Cor. 13:4-8
