“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”
Proverbs 9:9
Dear Christian, what is your disposition towards the work that has been put in your hands by our heavenly Father? One of the most essential things for any believer is to know exactly what the Lord requires of Him at every period and to submit to it.
However, if you get the knowing part right and you have a heart that is willing to submit, what happens to the doing part? The truth is it is quite impossible to do something if you do not give yourself to learning.
Our steps are ordered by the Lord, but we also have to consciously submit ourselves to being taught. This is telling you the next step you should take with all the assignments you have been given. Begin to apply yourself to learning.
There is a place for everything and one cannot take the place of another. So, after praying and submitting, learn. Ask the Lord to guide you and open your mind to people who have done the things you want to do excellently and begin to learn from them. If you are to write a book, begin to learn how to write correctly by practicing and reading. If you are to be a business person, apply yourself to the understanding of business principles and strategies. Network in your space so you can learn from other experts and people growing too. Above all, practice what you have learned.
It is needful that we position ourselves as excellent people. Jesus was not deficient in any aspect of His calling. He gave His time to studying the laws such that even when His tempters tried to ask Him questions to throw Him off, they were disappointed and impressed at the same time. Disappointed because He did not fall into their trap, but they could not help but be impressed because He even knew more than they did. Imagine that!
This is the kind of Christians we are called to be. One who is not found wanting in any aspect of his trade or calling. One who is constantly learning and innovating, yet submitted to God. Understand this, as much as it is the Holy Spirit who is at work in us converting men, we still need to preach the word, and there are certain souls you cannot get to listen to you if you are not clothed with excellence. Apply yourself to learning, dear Christian. Grow in all things.
Prayer
- Lord, help me understand the importance of growing steadily in knowledge that relates to my craft.
Lord, help me to never be comfortable wallowing in mediocrity, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
