YOU ARE NO LONGER A SLAVE BUT A SON AND HEIR OF GOD

“Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
Galatians 4:7

As Christians, we celebrate the ascension of Christ into heaven and the finalization of all the works that He came to do for us. His sacrifices gave us access to a new life in Christ, which is the essence of Galatians 4:7.

Despite the freedom that Christ has given us, some of us still live as slaves and find it hard to forsake our old life. We dwell in sin so much that we become comfortable in it. Galatians 4:8-9 reminds us of how we used to serve those which by nature are not gods when we did not know God. However, after we have known God, how is it that we turn again to the weak and beggarly elements to which we desire to be in bondage?

We must always remember the power of Christ’s resurrection, which gave us access into the presence of the Father. He died such a painful and embarrassing death for our sake. “And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom” Mark 15:37-38. With this, we don’t need anyone’s permission to enter into our Father’s presence.

As we celebrate the ascension of Christ, we must remember that we are no longer slaves but sons and heirs of God through Christ. We must acknowledge His sacrifice and live our lives as a reflection of His grace. It is a sin if we remain slaves to sin, or if we accept it and return to our old ways because of persecution. We must run this race with perseverance, knowing that we have no strength of our own. Let us rededicate our lives to Christ and build on His works of righteousness.
