“And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.”
2 Samuel 24:24
Sacrificial giving means that you will not be a person who gives to God without honour, without reverence, and without understanding that He’s a King. Many times, even though we are willing and cheerful, we get so used to giving just the barest minimum that it never occurs to us that just as everything else increases, our giving is supposed to increase too.
We can see in Matthew 21:42 that God isn’t really looking at quantity, but at the quality of your offering, and the faith it requires to bring it forth. How much did the woman who dropped her last mite believe in God to have given Him all? How much reverence did Abel have for God to have brought his firstborn flock?
Giving should always be about the posture of our heart. It should reflect how much we honour God and how much we trust Him. It should never be about a transaction — trusting God to give you double. But, it should be about honour, reverence, and true trust — Lord, I trust you enough to know that you are Lord of all I have.
Charge: Honour the Lord.
