“Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD saith, be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.”
1 Samuel 2:30
One of the things we must hold dear to our heart is the fact that God does not joke with His covenants. Right from Genesis, we saw that God always seeks to walk with men on the ground of covenants. For any covenant to be preserved, both parties must have reckoned that it is a shared participation.
When we come into a covenant with God, and we have understood that it is a shared participation, the next thing is never to fail to honour the terms and conditions of such covenants. Prophet Eli dishonoured the covenant and, therefore, dishonoured God by doing so.
While there will be distractions, pressures, and subtle wooing by the enemy, we must not turn a blind eye to them or ignore them, rather we must go to the Lord in prayer to strengthen us in living the way that will be pleasing to Him.
In keeping our covenants with God, it is vital to know that total obedience to God’s commandments is the key. Our obedience will ensure the continuity and life of the covenant, but when we disobey, especially consistently, then God is not to be blamed when the promises of the covenant seem far from us.
