“FLEE sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.“
1 Corinthians 6:18
We’ve read in the Bible that God will always make a way of escape from temptations for us (1 Corinthians 10:13). However, while other forms of temptations might have their escape routes, the way of escape from the sin of fornication or sexual immorality is clearly stated in the verse above—YOU MUST FLEE. That’s the fastest antidote. You can’t stay in the place of sexual immorality and ask God to save you from being tempted.
It is easy to think the sin of fornication starts when you lie with one you are not married to, but as we see in Mark 7:21, it usually begins from your heart. As a matter of fact, Jesus said that whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed the act already in his heart. This means that to obey the command of fleeing fornication, you must start from the thoughts you nurture in your mind.
Fleeing sexual immoralities means running whatever stirs up unholy thoughts in your mind. It means refusing to stay in environments that encourage fornication, refusing to have discussions that stir up unholy imaginations; never feeding your eyes with pictures and videos that inspire your yearning for what is ungodly. And, sometimes, it means abandoning your shirt and running for your dear life as Joseph did (Gen. 39:7–12).
No form of sexual sin should (fornication, adultery, homosexuality [gayism, lesbianism], bestiality, masturbation, rape, etcetera) ever be taken lightly at all. While asking for and receiving a purged and sanctified heart is essential, never assume you are immune to this temptation because of your depth in God. It is simply not true. Obey God’s word and flee. Run away. Be accountable. Seek Help. Don’t ever put yourself in such a dire situation. If you ever find yourself in that situation for reasons beyond your control, remember Joseph, and do whatever it takes to flee, even if it means jumping a fence to escape.
Let’s stop assuming that we’re too spiritually mature to be tempted. “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” 1Cor.10:12 What we have in God is too precious to lose. The Bible says to flee. So, please, FLEE.
Prayer
- Lord, I ask for the grace to flee from sexual atrocities.
- Help me, Lord, to never align my thoughts with the world’s ideologies.
- Teach me, Lord, to be humble enough to run from things you have asked me to run from.
