“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

Luke 12:15

Often, we measure a man’s worth by his possessions, influence, and visible success, making it easy to mistake accumulation for significance. Our houses may become larger, wardrobes fuller, and our accounts heavier, and yet, our hearts may remain restless. This perspective quietly teaches that life is defined by what one owns. But Jesus interrupts that illusion with a sobering warning in the opening Scripture.

Covetousness is subtle. It rarely announces itself loudly. It whispers, “Just a little more.” More security, recognition, and comfort, yet, the pursuit of “more” can quietly replace the pursuit of God. When the desire for increase becomes the centre of the heart, contentment fades.

In our opening passage, Jesus was not condemning stewardship or diligence; He was exposing the danger of building identity around possessions. What truly makes a life is not what fills your hands but what shapes your heart.

Charge: Examine what you are pursuing. Are you gathering things while neglecting eternity? Are you increasing in goods but decreasing in gratitude? Let Christ define your value.

When He weighs your life, He will not count your possessions; He will measure your devotion.
