“Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto you, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

John 3:5

Being born of water symbolises repentance and baptism, a public declaration of our faith. In the Bible, water baptism represents a believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-5). It’s an outward expression of an inward change, a willingness to leave our old lives behind and embark on a new journey with God.

Being born of the Spirit, on the other hand, is a work of God, a spiritual transformation that occurs when we put our faith in Jesus Christ. It’s the Spirit’s role to regenerate our hearts, giving us a new nature and enabling us to live a life that pleases God (Titus 3:5). This spiritual birth is what sets us apart from the world and makes us children of God.

Jesus makes it clear that without this spiritual rebirth, we cannot enter the kingdom of God. Our old nature, tainted by sin, cannot inherit God’s kingdom. We need a new birth, a transformation that only God can accomplish. Therefore, become baptised with water and the Holy Spirit.
