“They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.”
Jonah 2:8
The mercy of God is one of the advantages that we believers have. His mercy fights for us and preserves us even when we are due for condemnation. One of the things that can make a believer to forfeit the mercy of God is discussed in our passage today. Lying vanities here can be likened to idols. An idol is anything we place in our hearts higher than God.
This could be money, your loved ones, job, business, a form of entertainment, ambition, pride, and anything else that you exalt. However, what we usually don’t know is that when we let something take the place of God, we become blind to what God has for us because our attention is only on the thing we want and desire so strongly. Hence, we forfeit what God wants to do for us without even knowing we’ve missed out on something huge.
As believers, we should always place God first in our hearts. Since God will not force Himself on you, you have the responsibility of making sure your eyes are clear enough to see where He is leading you.
Charge: Don’t miss out on the mercies of God because your eyes are fixed on things that appear to be good.
