“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.”
1 Timothy 6:17-18
God is a good God. He is willing to give us all that we need and even want. However, there’s one thing He always looks at when He provides – He watches how you steward that which you are given.
In John 6:12, after Jesus had done a miracle where He provided for all that were there to eat until they were full, His instruction to His disciples was to make sure that the fragments were gathered so none would be wasted.
Our Lord does not like waste. He does not like the things He gives us being used for the wrong purposes. And most of all, He does not like it when our hearts cleave to the gifts instead of the Giver.
Today’s scripture tells us what the Lord requires of us when we are blessed with riches.
1. Be rich in good works.
2. Be ever ready to distribute.
3. Never be proud or contemptuous of others.
4. Be willing to communicate with others. (Of course willingness to communicate comes with humility, tolerance, understanding, etc.)
In all this, it is important to ask the Lord to direct your path on how to utilise every resource you’re blessed with.
